What roofs are like in Bridgewater
Bridgewater was a farming township until the 1960s. It went from roughly eight thousand people in 1950 to thirty thousand by 1970 and nearly forty six thousand now, so most of the housing came in that postwar rush. Bradley Gardens was laid out from about 1931 and built out through the 1930s to the 1960s. Ranches, Cape Cods and split levels dominate there and in Green Knoll and Martinsville. Those are simple roof shapes, which is good news, but they are also the shapes most likely to still be carrying more than one layer of old shingle.
The First Watchung Mountain ridge crosses the northeast section, with Chimney Rock at its edge, while the Raritan River and its North and South Branches form the major boundaries. Average elevation is only about 138 feet, so the contrast between ridge and bottom land is stark. Ida in September 2021 is the reference point for everyone here: the Finderne and Bound Brook border was hit hardest, Chimney Rock Road partially collapsed, there were around forty water rescues and ten building collapses, and hundreds of trees came down through the Finderne floodplain and along Foothill Road. Irene had already submerged the old American Cyanamid site in 2011.

We had trees down in Ida. Could the roof still be damaged?
Very possibly, and this is worth taking seriously years later. A limb strike that did not puncture the roof can still crack or crease shingles and break the sealant bond along a course, and that damage is invisible from the ground. It shows up later as a leak in a heavy rain. If your street lost trees in 2021 and nobody has been up there since, that is exactly what a free inspection is for.

Read that carefully, because it is easy to misuse. These figures describe the age of the houses in Bridgewater, not the age of the roofs on them. Plenty of homes here are on their second or third covering, and a house from 1974 may well be carrying a roof from 2015. No tax record can tell you when a roof was last done, and anyone who quotes you off a build year is guessing.
